Formulas Used

1. Mean (Average)

Mean = (Sum of all observations) / (Number of observations)

2. Median

For ungrouped data:

If n is odd:
Median = (n + 1)/2 th observation

If n is even:
Median = (n/2 th + (n/2 + 1) th observation) / 2

3. Mode

Mode = Most frequent observation

Question 1

Find the mean of first 5 natural numbers.

Solution:
Numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Sum = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15
n = 5

Mean = 15 / 5 = 3

Question 2

Find the mean of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.

Solution:
Sum = 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 30
n = 5

Mean = 30 / 5 = 6

Question 3

Find the median of 3, 7, 9, 15, 21.

Solution:
Already arranged

n = 5 (odd)

Median = (5 + 1)/2 = 3rd term

Median = 9

Question 4

Find the median of 2, 4, 6, 8.

Solution:
n = 4 (even)

Median = (2nd term + 3rd term)/2
= (4 + 6)/2 = 5

Median = 5

Question 5

Find the mode of 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 3.

Solution:
Most frequent number = 3

Mode = 3
